Nickel Mesh Procurement Guide for Industrial Buyers
How to specify, RFQ, and qualify nickel mesh suppliers. 7-line RFQ checklist, supplier qualification criteria, and Mill Test Certificate requirements per EN 10204 3.1.

The single most expensive procurement mistake in electrode manufacturing is writing “nickel mesh” on an RFQ without parameters. Two suppliers will quote completely different products — 20 mesh woven Ni200 versus 60 mesh knitted Ni201 — both technically “nickel mesh,” both incompatible for the same electrode position. A proper specification eliminates ambiguity and ensures comparable quotes. Without it, you are comparing different materials at different price points, and your electrode stack will find the difference in the first 5,000 operating hours.
TL;DR — RFQ must define 7 parameters: mesh count (with tolerance), wire diameter (with tolerance grade), material grade (Ni200/Ni201/N6), weave or knit type, surface finish (specify Ra), cut dimensions, and EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificate. Qualify suppliers on documentation, not price. Ni201 costs 5-8% more than Ni200 but delivers 3x stack lifetime.
Write a Specification, Not a Product Name
An RFQ for nickel mesh electrode substrate must define six parameters and one certification requirement. Suppliers who cannot provide documentation for all seven items should not be on your shortlist.
The 7-Line RFQ Checklist
- Mesh count (mesh/inch) or packing density (g/m2) — with tolerance band. For electrolyzer electrodes: 30-60 mesh woven, 660-1150 g/m2 knitted.
- Wire diameter (mm) — with tolerance grade. Plus/minus 0.003 mm for fine wire (diameter at or below 0.1 mm), plus/minus 0.01 mm for standard wire. Laser micrometer verified.
- Material grade — Ni200 (min 99.5% Ni, max 0.15% C) for ambient service. Ni201 (min 99.0% Ni, max 0.02% C) for KOH service above 80 C. N6 (Chinese GB, min 99.5% Ni+Co) for PRC supply chain.
- Weave or knit type — Plain weave (uniform aperture, standard for electrodes), twill weave (higher flexibility), single jersey knit (elastic PTL), or interlock knit (crush-resistant PTL).
- Surface finish — As-woven, deburred, or electropolished. Specify Ra value for electropolished finish (2 um Ra typical).
- Width and cut dimensions — Roll width (standard 1000 mm, max 2400 mm woven / 2700 mm knitted) or cut-to-size with tolerance (plus/minus 0.5 mm).
- Certification — Mill Test Certificate per EN 10204 3.1 covering: chemical composition by OES, mesh count by optical inspection, wire diameter by laser micrometer, and tensile properties per ASTM E8.
Qualify the Supplier, Not Just the Quote
Price per square meter reveals nothing about electrode lifetime. Ni200 (0.15% C max) costs approximately 5-8% less than Ni201 (0.02% C max), but can reduce stack lifetime from 60,000 hours to under 20,000 due to grain-boundary carbide precipitation and intergranular corrosion in hot KOH. The procurement saving is wiped out approximately 100x by the cost of a single unscheduled stack teardown.
Qualify suppliers on three documented capabilities. First, incoming nickel cathode certification with traceable heat numbers — the supplier must be able to trace every mesh roll back to the cathode lot. Second, in-process dimensional inspection with calibrated laser micrometers — mesh count and wire diameter verified on every production batch, not just on a type sample. Third, final Mill Test Certificate per EN 10204 3.1 — request a sample MTC before placing a production order. If a supplier hesitates on any of these three, they do not have the quality system your electrode manufacturing requires.
Bottom line: Specify by parameter, not by product name. Qualify by documentation capability, not by quoted price. The cheapest mesh that meets your specification is the right procurement decision. The cheapest mesh that does not meet your specification will cost you a stack replacement — and that cost is never on the supplier’s invoice.
